Beauty Resolutions

I wouldn’t call myself the resolution making type, but with the coming of the new year, I definitely welcomed the chance to press the reset button on a few of my goals. I know I’ve talked about it at least a few times here, but debt pay off is a major goal for us this year. I’d like to pay off my student loans in full, but in order for that to be possible, I need a small miracle, and to cut back on some spending. I’d specifically like to cut back on beauty spending.

My husband and I both have an allowance of money to spend on a weekly basis, and while I don’t go outside of my spending limits often, I tend to use almost my entire allotment on beauty products. I’m boring and predictable, and could use a new pair of shoes or a new purse, but instead I’m always buying a new lipstick. Although all of our earthly needs are met with our current spending habits, I want to cut back. It feels wasteful that I have all this makeup that I don’t use.

So if I had to choose a beauty resolution for 2015 it would be shopping my own stash more, and getting better at de stashing. A few weeks ago, I went in my basement where I keep all the overflow and couple glasses of wine later and I had tidied things up a bit down there and gotten rid of a lot of things I haven’t used in ages. With that territory, I know I need to cut back in general.

I would never call shopping for beauty products an actual addiction, but it’s definitely been my vice for a long time. When we lived out in Washington, my husband worked long hours and my entertainment was shopping. I would walk the mall and if something caught my eye, I might do a few more laps around the mall while I thought about it, but chances are it was going to be mine. Now that I have two kids at home, I don’t make it out to shop very often, but there’s this handy little thing called online shopping that I have become very fond of.

The act of NOT shopping is actually pretty fun for me lately. I’m making it a bit of a game. I don’t want to quit beauty shopping cold turkey, but I’ve limited myself to a major purchase a month. For the month of January, I bought the Nars Dual Intensity Eyeshadow palette. I drooled over it for weeks before buying it, and now I am having fun drooling over what I might buy in February. But in the meantime when I’m not planning my next purchase, I’m shopping my stash. A couple things I pulled out today were the It Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye, Bite Beauty Lush Fruit Lip Gloss Trio, Lancome’s Star Bronzer palette, Lorac Pro 2 palette, and Too Faced Chocolate Bar palette.

I don’t think I wore the concealer more than a few times. It’s one of It Cosmetics’ many choices, and I love every concealer I’ve tried from them, but I must have either not loved it right out the gate or forgot about it. The lip glosses were a MUST HAVE that I stayed up on Black Friday to buy….then only used a handful of times. I used the ever loving hell out of the Too Faced Chocolate Bar palette when I first bought it, but I want to rediscover it and use it again. I remembered how much I loved it when the second Chocolate Bar palette came out and I was giving it googly eyes. The LORAC Pro 2 palette feels like a joke because I needed it immediately upon release to the point of driving WAY out of my way when I was 39 weeks pregnant to buy it and then only used it three times. And Lancome’s Star Bronzer palette is yet another one- I love palettes like this because they have a bronzer, highlighter, and blush all in one place. It takes the guess work out of how I’m going to find three coordinating products to wear, then adds the dilemma of which palette I’ll use because I probably own 10 blush palettes similar to this one. First world problems, indeed.

Here are many other products I own, that are most likely sitting in a cardboard box in my basement, waiting for me to love them again.

Do you have a beauty resolution? I’d love to hear it!

I know I’m not helping here, but that NARS palette is worth every penny! But I agree, sometimes NOT buying can be so much fun 🙂

I definitely am trying to shop my stash more this year too! It’s so easy to spend money on pretty things that I pretty much already have in my stash.

I’m with you on shopping your own stash more. I have so many things I haven’t used it’s insane. I just thought about having a get together with my girlfriends, and let them go through my stuff.

I can relate. When I destashed before NYE, hub had to help me throw my “junk”. He asked “is there a dead body inside, it’s soooo heavy”. Embarrassing that it’s all makeups!

I need to shop my own stash also. I have so many purchases I haven’t opened. With so many things tucked away in drawers I forget what I have.
