Contouring Made Simple

I’m a pretty no muss, no fuss type of a girl when it comes to my makeup, but there are always those occasions where you find yourself pulling out all the stops. Today, I did a friend’s makeup for her (surprise) 30th birthday party. It was so much fun because she had no idea that she was going to be having a party, just that she was going out with some friends. She doesn’t do her makeup on a regular basis, so it was a special treat for her to wear any at all. It made me think of how I don’t always contour but I LOVE doing it and when I am having a special makeup day, it’s a step I don’t skip.

If you’re not a contouring guru like half the people on Instagram these days, a palette like the It Cosmetics My Sculpted Face palette is a good place to start. I found this baby to be pretty foolproof in terms of figuring out what goes where. If you check below, you can see that it comes with a neat chart to figure out where the light and the dark shades go. It doesn’t have to be confusing!

my sculpted face paletteAt first glance, this palette totally resembles a matte neutral eyeshadow palette. The good news is, it could totally double as one! The pans are huge and you’ll get a lot of mileage out of them if you’re using them for your face but you could definitely use them for the eyes too.

You can do a lot of things with a contouring palette and I’m not going to pretend to be an expert, but with a little practice you can bring out your cheekbones, slenderize your nose or forehead, look more lifted, hide a double chin, or really whatever you want. The Kardashians made the contour popular, but it’s definitely doable at home with a palette like this one. I followed the directions and really liked the results!

it cosmetics my sculpted faceOn a day that I wanted to use a deeper berry lipstick I decided to go a little dramatic with the rest of my makeup as well. Of the two light shades in the palette, one of them is a matte and one has a slight shimmer. I concentrated the matte highlighting shade under my eyes to brighten them up, and used the matte shimmer on my brow bone and my inner corners. It’s less obvious here, but I used some of the darker shades to chisel myself out some cheekbones and traced the around my jawline and hairline.

I was pleasantly surprised that it gave me a healthy, tanned look rather than making my face look dirty. I haven’t had amazing luck with every contour palette I’ve used, so my expectations were set rather low. I am really digging the results! contouring it cosmetics 1contouring it cosmetics 2In these pictures I’m using this as a contour palette and as an eyeshadow. I’m totally loving it! I am a contour convert (when I have time) and this is a perfect go-to product that takes the guess work away.

Do you have a go-to contour product? I’m curious what you’re using so share below. If you’ve tried this one let me know what you think of it!

I love this little set, it has a nice variety of tones in it. It is better than the ABH in my opinion!

Love the look you created! I am too chicken to contour. Scared I’ll look like i just smeared dirt around or something

I love that IT came out with this years before the contouring craze. I bought it at least 6 years ago.

I haven’t figured out contouring yet and worry I’ll look muddy, so I opt for plain ol’ bronzer. But this kit looks easy to use and I like the easy diagrams.
