UPDATE: Since initially writing this post, I have gone on to have more kids. I have 3 kids total- 3 times now I have dealt with post partum hair loss and growth. I have it down to a science now! I have new recommendations. Click the picture or the text below to see what I bought on Amazon that made a HUGE difference for me and in just one month. Lots of before/after pictures. This is not a drill!
If you are pregnant or just had a baby, you might be experiencing some massive hair loss. I hope my tips will be useful to you! I had 3 kids in 4 years so I know what it’s like to experience major shedding after a baby!
I started brushing my hair every time I went into the bathroom because my hair would come out by the handful. My favorite brush is the Wet Brush. Every time I showered, I would literally have a nest of hair in the shower. I’m not much of a shedder normally, but I would have to take my gross web of hair out of the shower with me each time I bathed or the shower wouldn’t drain. If you brush your hair several times a day, you can gather your shedding hair and toss it out little by little rather than constantly have hair on your shirt, on the floor, in the shower, etc. I also cleaned my hairbrush out at least once a day. It sounds extreme, but it was necessary, believe me. For weeks I couldn’t go anywhere without bringing a trail of shedding hair with me.
I love to straighten my hair, but when I would use my straightener with thinning hair it would just make my hair look even thinner and flat on my head. Instead, I tried to keep a limit on the styling tools I used. No blowdryer, no straightening iron. I slept in braids at night and unraveled them in the morning for a little natural looking wave. I used a curling iron to touch up my hair here and there.
If you do want to use a straightener, be careful to use high quality tools that have a variety of heat settings that can be turned down. I’ll link some of my favorites that I use below!
Headbands are a pretty ingenious way to disguise post-partum hair loss if you ask me! I love that the thick ones that cover your hairline are in right now! Some of my favorites are shown below.
Direct attention elsewhere.
As someone who has always taken great pride in my hair, it was a huge blow to my ego to have terrible hair months after pregnancy. I already had a hard time losing the baby weight, and adding more self image issues surely didn’t help me. It definitely helped me to direct attention away from my jacked up hair and play up other features. An easy mom-friendly favorite? Wear a bright lipstick. It distracts from everything else! Some of my favorites:
There are lots of products meant for women who have thinning hair, graying hair, etc. and want to disguise the problem. Powdering your scalp may seem extreme but it makes an amazing difference. It can flawlessly hide roots that are growing in a different color, or hide thinning spots. My favorite comes in several colors including blonde, black, red, and brunette. This stuff is phenomenal, and the price is right.
Ok, so on to the real stuff…HOW AM I GOING TO GROW THIS BACK?!?!
I won’t keep you waiting any longer. I tried so many things with all three of my pregnancies, and it wasn’t until I was done with my third that I accidentally stumbled upon something that worked amazingly well for me. A friend told me I should use castor oil to grow my hair back, which is the ONLY reason I took before pictures for this post. I thought I was going to find the magical cure for hair growth and I wanted to document it. The only problem was I used it one time and my scalp was SO GREASY I couldn’t continue. Plus, I didn’t want to have to wash my hair more than twice a week. #newmomlife
So anyway, two days later I started using a new shampoo, conditioner, and hair oil on my hair. And a month later I literally couldn’t BELIEVE the difference in my hair. I wanted to cry tears of joy. And luckily for me I had taken those before pictures for the castor oil experiment that I never stuck with…so I have actual proof that it worked so well!

Another thing I had luck with?
After my first pregnancy, I used René Furterer’s RF-80 Concentrated Serum, which is for sudden or hereditary thinning hair. They are little glass vials that contain a double patented and scientifically proven formula that combats thinning hair caused by pregnancy, stress, an unbalanced diet, or medication. The ingredients work to naturally encourage the growth of stronger hair and improve the hair structure for thicker or faster growing hair.
I felt like they worked well when I used them but they were tricky. At the time I used them, you had to break the glass vials to get the liquid out. They were kind of messy and expensive. In my opinion, I was more impressed with the Darshana I used after my third pregnancy. If you’re curious about the RF-80 Concentrated Serum, I listed some of the info below:
Natural Pfaffia® extract (Brazilian Ginseng): Stimulates and increases the growth of the blood capillaries around the root bulb
Biotin: Promotes stronger hair
Essential oils of Sage and Lemon: Increase blood circulation
Vitamins: A, F, B5, H and PP: Stimulate cell renewal, anti-oxidant
Methionine: Promotes keratin formation
I lost my before/after pictures from when I used these, but here’s a little excerpt from an old post I did where I detail my experience with them:
Once a week for twelve weeks, these little glass vials can be broken open and massaged into the scalp. I normally put these on right after a shower, and I wait until my hair has dried. You could probably put it on wet hair, but I like being able to feel my scalp get wet with the serum and know that I have reached every bit of my scalp. I concentrate a lot of the serum on my hair line and where I feel my hair is the patchiest. I have used 4 vials so far and have noticed that the hair around my hairline is growing in thicker than it normally did before I was pregnant, so I am pretty pleased with the results. Hair is normally supposed to grow about 1/2 inch per month, but I’ve noticed since using this over the span of one month, my hair on my hairline has grown at least that much. I’d call that success! I have a lot of flyaway little wispies in the front, but on the sides where I used to be balding, the hair is growing in quite thick!
Just had a baby? You’ll love some other articles I’ve written:
