I’m a huge fan of Tarte eyeshadows and I love mermaids, so I was excited to get my hands on the Tarte Be a Mermaid & Make Waves Eyeshadow Palette. I often buy into the hype of something new and am quick to buy, try a few times, and cast away an eyeshadow palette. But have you seen this?! I am super excited for this mermaid collection and I am happy to say this palette totally lives up to the hype for me!

First of all, I went to Sephora today with some money in my pocket and a wish list and I TOTALLY didn’t intend to buy this. It was a pass for me when I saw it online. I felt like it was very similar to many things I already own. Warm toned palettes are in style right now, and I seem to have collected plenty of similar shades! But then I saw it (cue choir of angels) and I touched it and I knew I needed it!
This palette is a stunning warm toned palette with neutrals, jewel tones, and a few aquatic tones. Is it similar to many things I already own? Yes! That is probably why I gravitated towards it. I do own many things with the same shades but I love the mermaid packaging and I think these shades swatch more shimmery, more duochrome, and bolder than the things I own that are similar.
This palette doesn’t exactly remind me mermaids (save for Bubbles, Lagoon, and Splash- the three blue tones). Out of a mermaid inspired palette, I might have expected to see more blues, greens, bronze, etc. I am surprised to see a lot of warm berry tones and a great selection of bronze/nude/rose gold type shades. That is GREAT because it’s what I love but it may not fit with the aesthetic you’re expecting for a palette of this namesake.
Sandbar and Shore Thing are perfect crease shades for me. I can create neutral eye looks as well as bolder and brighter eye looks with this. I like that the shimmery shades here all have a creamy texture and apply with a foiled metallic look. The mattes perform similarly to other matte shadows from Tarte’s range. The color payoff is amazing. They come across rich and pigmented and true to the Amazonian Clay formula I’ve come to know and love, they don’t crease or fade. I don’t even really NEED a primer with these but I’m testing this one with SPF and it’s working out great for me. (For real though! A primer with SPF right in time for summer. YAY!)
Sometimes I’ll look at online reviews of something after I bought it to see how everyone else is liking something. I was surprised by some of the complaints on this palette. Some people swatched this and the colors barely showed up. They called it a standard warm toned palette and said it had small pans. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a bad batch out there because my palette is so creamy and soft and the color payoff is amazing. The pans are small but not so small I can’t fit my finger or a makeup brush in there.
I completely love this palette. It screams SUMMER to me and believe me, I’m ready! I think I’ll get a lot of use out of this. If you’re looking for this season’s take on a classic warm toned palette with beautiful, creamy, pigmented, foiled shades, mattes, an array of bronzey nudes, rose golds, and aquatic shades that inspire summer…
