I’m not a doctor, and I’m not offering medical advice. I’m simply sharing my experiences of how I’ve remained healthy during flu season this year.
This year has been absolutely brutal for the flu. People are getting sick left and right and many families I know with young kids are on round two or three of the flu. Can you imagine?! All three of my kids have gotten sick this year as well as my husband. I’ve cleaned up vomit around our house, on myself from my one year old getting sick on me numerous times, and been in a germ-filled environment for over a week without getting sick. Not all heroes wear capes.
First of all, please note that the stomach flu is different than influenza. You can get a shot (that may or may not work) to help prevent influenza. There is no shot that protects against the stomach flu. It’s just a bug that goes around. Everyone in my family gets a flu shot every year, and this year we got the flu…but they’re different.
So…how have I remained healthy?
I’ve been drinking lots of water. Like…a ton. I’ll drink ice water plain, ice water with a lemon, hot water with a lemon and honey…I mix it up so I don’t tire of fluids. I definitely attribute a big part of my health to my water intake.
I use essential oils for cleaning, diffusing, sanitizing, and applying on my/my family’s skin. If you’re using high quality therapeutic grade oils they will work to get rid of bacteria. I LOVE this blog post by a scientist explaining how essential oils like Thieves really kill germs. I use Thieves cleaner on my floors (carpet and faux-wood), I use it to clean every surface of my home as an all-purpose cleaner, I use their hand sanitizer, and I even bring the spray with me to spray down handles or other surfaces when I’m on the go (lunch table at McDonald’s…I’m looking at you).
The rollerball I use was very easy to make. I swear by the vinyl labels and roller balls by Got Oil Supplies. I have an app I like to reference when it comes to what type of ailment I’m trying to “treat” be it stress, earache, flu, etc. For flu prevention, I typed in influenza and used a bunch of the oils they referenced. I used 5 drops of each Oregano, Orange, R.C., Lavender, Eucalyptus Radiata, Thieves, and Copaiba. I filled the rest of the roller ball up with Jojoba Oil. I REALLY don’t like to smell like a foot, and this particular mix isn’t bad as the eucalyptus and lavender cut through the rest of the scents, and I can definitely tolerate it!
I’ve been eating a TON of oranges. I know Vitamin C is good for me and I’ve taken a supplement with them, but I love eating oranges too so I’ve been buying the mini ones at the store and snacking on them constantly.
I’m obsessed with drinking bone broth. I like to heat it up over the stove and drink it as is, make it into a chicken noodle soup, or blend it up with an avocado for something a little thicker. Could I make bone broth at home? Yes…but I don’t have time and I think this stuff tastes way better than anything I could come up with. Plus, the price is right! Immuni-Qi Health Tonic & Illness Recovery was in my freezer so I made sure to thaw some out to make soup with.
Here’s the deal with this brand: they deliver the product frozen to keep it fresh, and you can freeze it until you’re ready to use it. They also use amazing ingredients. The beef is pasture-raised, AGA-Certified grass fed and finished with raising practices that go beyond organic. They use organic and pasture-raised chickens that forage for their food. 100% organic veggies and herbs. All their broths are Whole30 approved, gluten free, antibiotic free, added hormone free, and free of “natural flavors.”
Oh and also! I like to heat this up on my stove. We own and use a microwave, but I know nuking stuff in there strips it of a lot of the nutrients so unless I’m in a rush I try to cook this up on the stove.
I’ve been pumping myself with probiotics. My favorite brand is Hyperbiotics. They have lots of different types of probiotics, but my favorite is the ENT (ear, nose, throat). They have ones for people 50+, daily wellness, and others targeting different strains. I like that they’re chewable and the taste is definitely tolerable. I’m showing you the kids version because I’m all out of the adult ones (I’ve been taking them 2-3 times a day for intense support)!
I have several different bottles of these but have been taking the ENT because the mouth harbors a lot of bacteria and bacteria can make you sick. No thank you!
I haven’t been skipping my workouts. Even though my kids missed a lot of school and I didn’t get to the gym as much as I hoped I would that week, I made a huge effort to make up at least a few workouts. I typically have five scheduled workouts during the week and take weekends off. If I miss a day due to some other conflict, I usually feel a little off that week. I truly feel keeping up with my muscle strength and cardio made a big difference in my staying healthy.
Want my essential oil recipe as a pin that’s easy to save for later? I’ll hook it up 🙂
A few other more obvious ideas to help you stay healthy in your family:
- Don’t go out in public if you or someone in your family is sick.
- Wipe down and disinfect doorknobs and other surfaces in your house.
- Wash your hands frequently.
