Do you prefer a subtle or a strong highlight?

Highlighter is one of my favorite beauty products. I like a subtle, dewy looking highlighter, but I LOVE a highlighter that can be built up if I want something stronger and more strobe-like. I also tend to like a brighter and stronger highlight when my skin is fairer. In the dead of winter when I am a super pasty white, I love a super bold and glowing sheen on my skin. I collected four favorites to share with you today that you can get a variety of looks from.

Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hr Highlighter in Exposed: This is a gorgeous highlighter inspired by the bestselling Exposed nude blush that I also love. It is supposed to suit any skin tone and have 12 hours of fade-free wear. I tend to reach for this when I am using one of the Tarte Naughty Nudes blushes. It looks great used as a highlighter but I’ve also used it over top of blush as a blush topper. It gives blush a bit of a natural looking glow when worn in this way. I like the way this looks on natural makeup days.

Laura Mercier Face Illuminator in Devotion: This is an absolutely beautiful product to use but also to look at in the pan. I mean seriously…rippling shiny waves of bright, shimmering, gorgeous highlighter. This product absolutely glows. There is a hard outer layer that is almost impossible to break through with a makeup brush so I’ve been using my finger to apply it to the high points of my face. A dense makeup brush will also work! Building the color works well, so you can have a sheer glow or more intense color. Now that I’m getting deeper into the product I’ve noticed that there is more color payoff past the outer shell. I absolutely love this illuminator.

Cover FX Custom Enhancer Drops: I’ve raved about these lots of times. Read my review here. These work amazingly well to boost my glow when I mix them with moisturizer, primer, and foundation. I also have applied them alone, and the more I use the more I glow. I love that you can get a natural looking finish or a super strong highlight with these depending on how they’re used.

It Cosmetics Hello Light Anti-Aging Créme Illuminizer: This is a beautiful cream illuminizer that is perfect on dry and on aging skin. This adds a beautiful lit from within glow to my complexion without being over the top. I find this applies best with my fingers. I love this but when I buy it I have to commit to using it a bunch since it’s cream- it will dry out over time if it’s not used up within several months. Of course with my beauty product hoarding it often takes a looooong time to use a product up completely, but the average person will use and love this long before it dries up.

These are only four of my highlight loves, but I have so many! I recently bought the Becca Rose Quartz highlighter (read review) and am in love with that and before that I bought the Clinique Uplighting Illuminator Powder (read review) and that is another of my favorites. I tend to rotate what I wear by the day depending on my mood! And I especially love the ones that have buildable coverage so I can decide as I’m applying how I want to wear it!

Have you tried any of these highlighters? Do you like a subtle or a strong highlight?

Most of the time I reach for subtle highlight, but yes, I love heavy makeup in winter. 🙂 I totally fell in love with the Laura Mercier packaging, that’s absolutely stunning. ?

I need to start using highlighter more often. I gravitate toward the icy pink ones like the beautiful Laura Mercier one, Devotion, that you showed. So lovely!

I’m all for subtle highlight. I have combo skin that’s on the oily side so I need to be careful with my shimmers.

I have to be careful about highlighting, because my skin has gotten so oily. I do really like the look of those Laura Mercier products thought!

Those Laura Mercier powders are gorgeous. I like a very subtle highlighting look but I don’t use my products enough to justify more.

As an older lady I definitely prefer subtle highlighters and cream ones that don’t sink into my lines.
