Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

In case you didn’t already know, September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness month. It’s right around the corner…literally, can you believe that September 1st is on Sunday? What happened to summer?

Cancer in all forms is very important to me. I lost my grandpa to prostate cancer a couple years ago, and other members of my family have fought/are fighting thyroid cancer, skin cancer, and lung cancer. If you don’t know anybody affected by cancer, you’re LUCKY but chances are pretty good that at some point in your life you’ll know someone who is affected by it.

Taking care of my health has become increasingly important to me in the last few years. The habits and choices we make right now shape the future of our health. If you’re skinny right now and think that makes you “healthy” and therefore you can eat garbage all the time, you might be in for a rude awakening when you get older (or have a physical). If you’re buying in to all of the new fitness and health fads right now that haven’t been tested over a long span of time, you might have reason to worry too.

As for me, I know that clean eating and regular exercise are the ticket to health. Regular skin cancer screenings, annual exams, and knowing my body help me feel like I am preserving my health and that I will be around a long time. Although I feel lucky to have my health right now, I know that can all change in the blink of an eye. Diseases like cancer tend to creep up out of nowhere when you least expect it to rear its ugly head. Especially in families like mine where there are strong genetic links to cancer, I know that I will always need to keep both eyes open when it comes to my health, and get checked yearly for anything of concern.

Although it’s not hard to find compassion for cancer, it sometimes can be difficult to scrape together money to donate and put your money where your mouth is. That’s why it’s awesome when companies like Laura Mercier are willing to donate 100% of the profits from sales of a few of their makeup items to the Laura Mercier Ovarian Cancer Fund. So many cosmetics companies are happy to slap on a pink label for the month of September to support cancer, but only end up donating a very small percentage to cancer. Personally, unless I’m buying that lipstick anyways, I’d rather just donate the whole amount of money to cancer, rather than 10% or less!

WHY IT MATTERS
  • Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death among gynecological cancers in the United States.*
  • Ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer death among American women.*
  • Know your family history. Up to 15% of all ovarian cancer is hereditary and there are things you can do to reduce risk for yourself and your family.*
  • The American Cancer Society estimates that 22,280 new cases of ovarian cancer will be diagnosed in the United States in 2012; 15,500 women will die of the disease.
  • Most women newly diagnosed with ovarian cancer already have advanced disease.*
