My kids are like I am and they don’t like getting up in the morning. For years, I avoided breakfast simply because I didn’t like being awake so early in the morning and I couldn’t force myself to choke something down right after waking up. In the past few months I’ve been striving towards a healthier lifestyle, and one of the tweaks I made was eating breakfast without fail every morning. I have been doing greek yogurt and granola for my morning meal for months now. It has really made a difference in my energy level and I make better food choices the rest of the day when I’ve had breakfast.
Lately, I’ve been craving a change in my breakfast. I have such a good thing going now that I look forward to eating it, but I like to mix it up from time to time. When I was in elementary school I used to pour milk on my oatmeal in the morning to cool it down. It got me thinking about mixing hot and cold, and I had the idea to combine steel cut oatmeal with yogurt and some yummy fresh fruit as a twist on my morning meal. Through some experimenting I’ve created a recipe that the entire family can wake up for!
Walmart carries these new shelf-stable yogurts, called Quaker® Real Medleys® Yogurt Cups. They are in the cereal aisle. I’ve been wanting to try them because my almost 3 year old loves anything that is fun to eat. You add milk to the fill line of these, and then stir and wait a couple minutes, and the milk magically transforms the whole thing into yogurt! They come in Strawberry Almond, Apple Cinnamon, and Raspberry Pecan. She has loved the whole process of adding milk and waiting and watching. She bogarted the first two flavors I bought so I only got to try the Apple Cinnamon!
You can see how I kind of walked through the process above, it was super simple. I added milk to the fill line and stirred and while I was waiting for it to turn into yogurt, I put my bowl of steel cut oatmeal into the microwave. Both were ready in about two minutes! I put a dallop of the Apple Cinnamon on top of my oatmeal and topped with raspberries and blueberries. It was so delicious! I loved the textures and flavors- the heat from the oatmeal mixed with the spices of the apple cinnamon and the crunch of the granola in the mix was so satisfying and delicious! Once the 1/2 cup of cold milk is added (it won’t activate with warm milk) there are 25 grams of whole grains and 10 grams of protein, and that’s before I add in the nutrition from my steel cut oatmeal and berries.
This was so delicious and it really only took a moment- just add milk, stir, and eat! If you want to try these, check out your local Walmart’s dry cereal section.
