We traveled out of town over the weekend and when I was unrolling my makeup bag and unzipping the contents, I realized one of my brushes was caught in the zipper! This inspired me to come up with a makeup routine for times when no makeup brush is available. This would be perfect for travel so you could totally skip packing brushes whatsoever! I also think any time you are on the go this would be a perfect product list to defer to.
Makeup brushes and sponges can be great for blending, making precise brush strokes, etc. When you are just using your fingers, everything will be much softer. For this reason, I chose to stick with a more neutral color palette.
Since no brushes means no setting powder, I want to make sure my makeup sticks around, so I would start with a primer. This is a step I often skip, but the Laura Mercier Foundation Primer Blemish-Less does an amazing job of helping my makeup stick like glue while keeping my complexion looking great. I’ve been using a slew of skincare lately to keep my hormonal preggo acne at bay, but I’ll take the extra skincare boost through a primer any day! A perfect foundation that doesn’t require a brush or sponge is the Clinique Chubby in the Nude Foundation in Intense Ivory. If I had a Beauty Blender on hand I would use it to blend this out but it works perfectly well blended out with fingers as well. The formula for this is creamy, moisturizing and oil-free. I apply it in stripes on my face and blend it out, and then go back and add more under my eyes and around my nose where I have redness and under eye circles. I love the buildable coverage I get from this! I would also follow up with Clinique’s Curvy Contour. I would usually skip a contour on a day I was doing softer makeup but considering there are no brushes in this routine, that means I won’t have bronzer either. I need a little definition in my face so Curvy Contour comes to the rescue. This is an amazing cream contour stick and it’s super easy to blend out with your fingers. I’ve reviewed it here.
For blush I would choose a stick or cream! One of my favorites is the Clinique Chubby Stick Cheek Colour in Plumped up Peony. I’ve been a long time fan of Clinique’s cream blush sticks, and I am still hanging on to their last cream blush formulation from a couple years ago. Nothing is easier than swiping a few streaks across the apples of my cheeks for a healthy glow. These come in a few colors, and maybe I’ll review the range of them one of these days! It’s perfect for those brush free days.
For a highlight, there are so many liquid and cream versions out there right now, that it’s easy to find one that doesn’t require a brush to apply. A recent find is the Elizabeth Arden Beautiful Color Bold Illuminating Liquid Highlighter in Golden Kiss. It comes in a little pot with a mesh applicator. You can bounce your finger in the pot to get the perfect amount of product. The look is kind of a wet, dewy highlight that I love. You can build the coverage a little bit to your liking. This is such a pretty gold shade!
Onto eyes and lips! For lips you can use anything if you’re like me and like to apply straight from the tube! I recently rediscovered Dior Addict Lip Glow in Coral in my stash. I’ve been really into changing up my lipstick lately and I haven’t reached for this one in a long time. I forgot how much I love this sheer balm and how it seems to adapt to anything. It’s super soft on my lips and I love the coral shade that emerges once it’s been applied.
Eyebrows are so important to me in my makeup game since mine are so sparse. I love to fill them in a little bit every day because I think defining them improves the whole look of my face. I don’t always take the time to give sharp definition to my brows and on those days I will choose something like the Clinique Just Browsing Brush on Styling Mousse in Light Brown. It’s a tinted mousse with a tiny little brush that helps me fake a natural looking, thicker, fuller brow. It’s not messy at all and it works great. I might review this little guy on its own sometime soon. It reminds me of the Colored Clay Tinted Brow Gel that Tarte came out with a few years ago (except Clinique’s is $5 cheaper!)
Eyeshadow, eyeliner, and mascara are my last three steps. For eyeshadow, I highly suggest Make Up For Ever Aqua Cream Shadow in #13 Warm Beige. It’s a gorgeous champagne shimmer and I’ve gotten a lot of use out of this in the past 3-4 years since I’ve discovered it. It’s creamy when I apply it but it’s completely budge proof once it’s on. It’s easy to apply with my finger and #13 is the perfect shade that works with anything. It makes a great primer for eyeshadow too if you choose to apply eyeshadow over top later on! For liner, I’m loving one that is brand new by Elizabeth Arden. It’s the Beautiful Color Bold Defining 24 HR Liquid Eye Liner. I am really digging the shade Gilded Brown. The tip is micro fine but you can get a thin or thick line out of it depending on what you want. It’s water proof and smudge proof, and I can personal attest to the fact that it’s super long wearing- I fell asleep with a full face of makeup last night and the eyeliner was still perfect when I woke up. A few years ago, I went through a phase where I was looking for the perfect shade of brown liquid liner- something warm but not too red, with a super fine tip. I never did find what I was looking for then, but Gilded Brown fits the bill perfectly. For mascara, lately I’ve been using It Cosmetics Superhero Mascara (read review). I love it, but it’s been a few months since I’ve cracked it open and I’ll be looking for a replacement soon.
I’m really digging so many of these products, some being new favorites and some being old favorites. I love that I can do my makeup without brushes and still be happy with the way it looks. Most of these products lend themselves to a pretty natural look. Be on the lookout for individual reviews for a few of these products that I am really loving.
Do you ever do your makeup without brushes or sponges? I’d love to hear about the products you use when you are on the go!
