How to Pick a Face Mask for Your Skincare Needs

There are so many face masks out there, it can be hard to choose which one is the best for you. Back when I was in high school, I don’t remember there being very many options for face masks, but now if you look at any major skincare line, you will see there are SO many choices for every skincare need imaginable.

Personally, my skincare concerns change on a weekly basis! Sometimes I am worried about acne, and sometimes I am worried about severe dryness. On a regular basis I am concerned with anti aging and lack of moisture and radiance in my skin. It helps to have a couple options on hand so that no matter your skincare concern, you have something you can turn to in your arsenal. Don’t let the plethora of options overwhelm you…be grateful that no matter your ailment, there is a product out there that can make everything better!
I have compiled my absolute favorite masks in every category! You’ll have to excuse my dirty products. Some of these I’ve had for a while and bought myself and others are samples I’ve already reviewed and keep coming back to. They are all well loved and some of them are fingerprint-y but I think I get the point across anyways!

Do Everything Masks…

some press samples, some purchased by me, affiliate links

Miracle Skin Transformer Miracle Revival Mud Mask is an amazing mask meant to improve hydration, elasticity, and firmness, even skin tone, and reduce surface redness. The mud in the mask is formulated with bioactive silts sourced from European spring-fed lakes and it targets age spots, fine lines, and helps stimulate collagen production. It is also free of synthetic fragrances, dyes, waxes, mineral oils, and talc. For $38 you get an enormous tub of this that will probably last you a really long time, especially if it’s on rotation.
I have to hand it to Miracle Skin. I have never ever tried a product of theirs and not immediately fallen in love. This mask is no exception! After one use I can tell a noticeable change in my skin. This is my go to mask most of the time I am looking for something to magically make my skin look better and only have a couple minutes. It never leaves my skin tight and dry. My skin feels hydrated, looks more radiant, my pores appear to be smaller, my skin is softer, pretty much you name it, this mask does it! I feel like this is a one size fits all mask and anyone with any type of skin would really enjoy it. I love that this unclogs my pores and also makes my skin hydrated, in the same mask!
Zensation Healing and Soothing Mask is another mask that seems to do it all. I primarily use this in the summer since it’s meant for combination to oily skin types, and I fall a little more under that category in the summer than I do in the winter. This mask helps balance oil production, slows the growth of bacteria to prevent breakouts, calm inflammation, and reduces excess sebum to help create a radiant and clear complexion.
It’s described as a purifying treatment mask and I would definitely agree. This is like a breath of fresh air for my face and always makes my skin feels absolutely amazing. My skin always soaks up the mask and when I tissue it off I am left with the softest, most amazing complexion. I have on occasion worn this to bed too if I have a sunburn and it feels so nice!
For Acne…
Clinique Acne Solutions Oil Control Cleansing Mask is one I turn to when I’m having a bout with terrible skin. It contains smoothing natural clay and helps prevent blemishes, prevent breakouts and keep skin shine-free. I love that it doesn’t dry my skin out like most acne products do, so when I am having a breakout I often use this as my first step to clear my skin up before trying to monkey around with serums, spot treatments, and lotions.
I’ve found the key to using clay masks when you have dry skin is to really watch the clock and not let too much time pass before rinsing off. If the mask dries completely on your face and you get engrossed in a tv show and don’t wash it off for a half hour your skin is going to be hurting when you have to rip the dried clay off. This is one of the more mild acne masks I’ve found and I don’t get the terrible dryness after using it. I do need a little extra moisturizer when I’m done using it but it’s worth it for how well it clears my skin up.

Sheet Masks…

I am completely obsessed with sheet masks and I haven’t run into one I didn’t like! So far, my favorite ones are by Wei and by Karuna. Shiseido has Retinol Eye Masks that are part of their Spring line and I haven’t had a chance to try them yet (can’t use retinol when pregnant) but I’m REALLY looking forward to having them on hand as a treat come the end of September.

Karuna Clarifying Sheet Masks are amazing in every way. They are formulated for dry, dull, dehydrated and sensitive skin. They retain skin’s natural moisture level, infuse more moisture into the skin with hyaluronic acid (my favorite skincare ingredient), and renew damaged skin. After opening the package, you place the cloth mask on your skin and the amazing ingredients are then absorbed into your skin.
I feel like most people do a mask as part of their nightly ritual, but I love doing them in the morning when I get up. After removing the mask, I rub the excess liquids from the mask into my face and neck until they are fully absorbed, and then I apply my makeup right over top. I swear, your makeup will never look better than it does after you have just masked your skin! These are really a must have if you have any dullness at all.
Wei Gingko Leaf Repairing Treatment Mask is another amazing option for a sheet mask. I could have really put this under the “does everything” category. This fights anti-aging, reduces redness, firms, hydrates, brightens, gives a radiant glow, protects skin from free radical damage, and is for all skin types! Wow! The biggest difference between this and the Karuna mask is that this one gives a little bit of a tingling sensation when you first apply it. It’s not a painful tingle at all, but it’s definitely something that’s there right when you apply and it really shows you it’s working! I noticed that it went away after a few minutes.
My skin feels hydrated but also a little bit tighter after using this which is probably because this is jam packed with great skincare that is meant to help with anti-aging. Of course the tightening of the skin is temporary but really feels wonderful and I love that my little fine lines seem to disappear for a little while after use. If you haven’t tried a sheet mask you are really missing out!
Masks that work while you sleep…

Overnight masks are my favorite kind of mask. Applying something before bed and waking up to perfect skin is just my style. These three are some of my absolute favorites.

Peter Thomas Roth Camu Camu Power Cx30 Vitamin C Brightening Sleeping Mask (whew is that ever a mouthful!) is available exclusively at Sephora. This has been one of my absolute favorite finds and I’ll absolutely be buying this in the future. Basically, you get to treat your uneven skin tone, fine lines, and wrinkles while you sleep. The Camu Camu berry is a potent superfruit from the Amazon and provides 30 times more vitamin C  per ounce than an average orange, as well as having super absorption properties. You’re supposed to wear this over top of your serum and moisturizer. I’ve used it that way, but mostly I’ve been using it alone to make sure the results I’m achieving are truly from this product and not from other products. The scent is kind of citrusy but really mild and it fades after a few minutes. The mask absorbs almost immediately after application (just one pump does the trick). I can see an almost immediate difference in my skin’s luminosity after applying this, and it’s a total skin drink as well. I think this will be a summer staple for me when I start to freckle and need to keep my skin tone even and bright. It’s on the pricey end but when I run out I’ll definitely be saving my pennies and purchasing this.
Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Overnight Hydrating Mask is another wonderful option for an overnight mask. I think this one is absolutely perfect for skin headed into the new season. This is meant to give you hydrated, healthier looking skin by morning. Skin will able to absorb more moisture, be smoother and softer, refreshed and supple, and using this amplifies the hydration provided by a daily moisturizer. At night, you’re supposed to cleanse and tone, then apply this mask and leave on for 10 minutes. After tissuing the excess off, a thin layer is left on overnight. In the morning, cleanse and follow your normal skincare routine.
I have to admit I’ve never tried a mask like this before, but I do love it! It goes on very refreshing and when I remove all but a thin layer it feels slightly sticky. I don’t mind because the awesome ingredients seem to bind to my skin and when I wake up my skin looks so wonderful and I almost don’t need to use moisturizer. I’ve honestly never tried a single skincare product from Kiehl’s that I haven’t fallen in love with, and this is no exception. It is easily my favorite skincare line.

Clinique Moisture Surge Overnight Mask is one of my all time favorite skin care discoveries. I love Clinique’s Moisture Surge line, and wanted to replenish my moisturizer, and didn’t realize this was part of the line. I love the Moisture Surge formula in the summer, but it doesn’t have the SPF I need, so I prefer to use it at night. It just so happens that this mask is an overnight mask and is quite a bit cheaper than the moisturizer, plus comes in a squeezy bottle rather than a tub, which I definitely prefer. I absolutely love how this feels- it is slightly creamier than the regular formula.
I use this at night whenever I am feeling dry. I apply serum, eye cream, and then seal the deal with the overnight mask. This is the best stuff ever for moisture. My skin seriously glows in the morning after using this. I remember in high school I would use Moisture Surge at night (the moisturizer not the mask) and I would sometimes feel so confident in my skin when I woke up, that I would go foundation free the next day. I’m 27 now so the chances of me ditching foundation for the day are rather low, but this stuff makes me almost confident enough to skip it! The Overnight Mask is like the regular formula on steroids!
That’s a lot of masks! I hope you were able to get a little insight on what has worked for me. If you want to read more info or shop, click on the product below and check it out in detail!
