I wandered into a Sephora a few days ago to check out some of the latest and greatest products by Cover FX. It’s truly one of my favorite brands. I love that they are all about customizing; they have products that illuminate, mattify, glitterize, and let you choose your texture. They are also skin friendly and don’t use parabens, fragrance, gluten, mineral oil, talc, gluten, sulfates, or phthalates. You’ve seen me cover their products so many times on the blog!
So, naturally when I saw the new primers, I wanted them ALL but in the interest of sticking to my budget, I narrowed it down to two. The Gripping Primer and the Dewy Primer both spoke to me, but aside from the in store sample, they are entirely sold out. Even online! For shame.
What did I like about the Gripping Primer when I tested it out in store? I love the texture. It is a really thick gel that is firming and smoothing upon application. It applies in a thick layer that fills in fine lines, and has a sticky feeling that grips to the face and to makeup to provide a smoother finish. Makeup doesn’t slide around, and my foundation looks like a porcelain doll even at the end of the day. It’s the perfect primer, and I can’t wait to own it once it’s back in stock everywhere!
So…you want a firming and gripping primer to get that glass-like finish to your skin too? This primer has a couple of near dupes. Maybe you already have them in your collection!
Cover FX Gripping Primer Dupes
I immediately knew why I was so drawn to the Gripping Primer when I first tried it. It reminds me of an old favorite that I used to use ALL THE TIME. The Hourglass No. 28 Primer Serum is incredible and is a near exact dupe, texture-wise. The “28” in the product’s name refers to the formula’s key ingredients, which include 14 essential oils, 10 lipid-rich plant oils, and four vitamins. This is a luxury product that feels amazing on the skin and once I remembered I had it I found it in my collection and I’ve been using it daily. It’s slightly less tacky and more hydrating than the Gripping Primer.
I came very close to purchasing the Milk Hydro Grip Primer as a dupe of the Gripping Primer. This primer is formulated with hemp-derived cannabis seed extract and blue agave extract for hydration and hold. This is hydrating and tacky, but less so than the Cover FX. I ended up not purchasing it because I knew I’d wish I had gone with the product that had a little more “oomph.” If there was a Gripping Primer Light version, this would be it.
Ingredient wise, Milk is a fabulous brand: they are free from sulfates SLS and SLES, parabens, formaldehydes, formaldehyde-releasing agents, phthalates, mineral oil, retinyl palmitate, oxybenzone, coal tar, hydroquinone, triclosan, and triclocarban, and contains less than one percent of synthetic fragrances. This product is also vegan, cruelty-free, and gluten-free.
After Marie Kondo’ing my beauty stash the other day, I’m trying to be more content with what I have. I’m currently loving my Hourglass dupe, but when I use that up, I’ll consider moving on to this.
What are you using and loving? Have you seen this in stores yet? Will you spring for it?
