Comparing Tarte Shape Tape Foundations: Matte vs. Hydrating

Of the new and exciting beauty launches of the past few months, Tarte Shape Tape Foundation was close to the top of the list!  Everyone loves the cult favorite concealer and this was a much anticipated launch. If you’ve been reading my blog for a while you know I have two favorite concealers. One of them I’ve been using for years and it looks just like skin and the other looks amazing on full coverage makeup days. Since I loved the concealer so much, I couldn’t wait to try out the matte and hydrating versions of the foundation.

Since my skin is dry, I was especially excited to try the hydrating version of the foundation.

My thoughts on Hydrating Shape Tape Foundation

The Hydrating Shape Tape foundation goes on creamy and slightly thick. A doe foot applicator wand is used to apply. I needed to dip into the bottle a few times to get the amount of foundation necessary.

Word on the street is that the formula of this is the same as the Empowered Gel Foundation that they used to have; this formula is a possible rebrand under a more popular name with the Shape Tape label. That very well may be. If you missed that launch, this is a new way to try the product.

I really like the luminous finish given by this foundation. It’s hydrating and medium/full coverage. On my dry skin, I find that this applies smooth and doesn’t make me look dry and patchy. It doesn’t crease or fade on me for a long time. I don’t need to set it, because it does dry down on its own, but it starts to fade away around my nose and on my chin as time wears on. I would still consider it pretty long wearing, and even when I’m having a long day it still looks pretty good despite any signs of wear.

My thoughts on Matte Shape Tape Foundation

The Matte Shape Tape foundation reminds me exactly of the formula of the concealer that everybody loves so much. It’s extremely opaque, doesn’t settle into any fine lines, has brightening qualities, and is extremely matte.

Given that I have pretty dry skin, I have to be careful when wearing something that advertises itself as mattifying because it tends to suck all the moisture from my skin and leave me looking like a leather baseball glove. This has the ability to make me look flawless and airbrushed if I use adequate moisturizer with it. Skincare is the ticket to amazing foundation application when I am going matte. When I wear this, my skin looks hydrated and doesn’t look cakey, as long as I’ve done a lot of work with my skincare! My favorite moisturizer to use with this is the 72-hour moisturizer

The verdict? I really like both foundations! I don’t always opt for full coverage, but the Matte Shape Tape foundation is my current favorite mattifying foundation. I’ll wear it when I need full coverage in the summer because I know it’ll hold up despite any oil and sweat that come its way. I’ll wear the Hydrating Shape Tape on days I need to look fresh and flawless year round. It’s a great every day foundation if you’re looking for dewy full coverage.

The most important thing for myself is the longlasting time. 72 hours is perfect. Nice make up.
