CHI Lava 1? Volcanic Lava Ceramic Pro Spin N Curl- Review

One of my favorite things to test out for the blog? Hair tools! It’s ironic that I love writing about them so much because I rarely post on one. The reason is because most end up being gifted to a friend or chucked in the donation pile. They’re a pain to use, don’t heat up properly, or I just plain don’t like them. I was super intrigued by the looks of the Chi Lava 1″ Volcanic Lava Ceramic Pro Spin N Curl. Say that 10 times fast! It’s so funky looking that I couldn’t wait to give it a shot.

What it does

This is a fancy shmancy curling wand that uses volcanic lava combined with ceramic to create shiny curls without heat damage. Hair is drawn into the heat isolating curl chamber and timed to create perfect curls and waves.

How it’s different

I like that the trend in hair curling tools is around things that spin without using my wrist. I have the Sarah Potempa Beachwaver as well, and this is the same concept except that it grabs the hair and brings it into the chamber to curl.

The features

The tool heats up to 410°F and works for fine, medium, and coarse hair under different preset temperatures. The heat-up time timer is adjustable for each hair type and holds the hair for 15, 17, or 19 seconds. The curl chamber is safe and resets itself and releases the hair if something gets tangled. You can rotate the curl chamber in two different directions. There is an 11 foot swivel cord and a one hour auto shut off.

What I love

I love all of the features because I’d never use something like this if it didn’t have tangle protection. I also have left my house and come back because I wasn’t sure if I turned off a heat tool, so the fact that this has auto shut off is pretty great. I love that you can get curls going in two directions which makes it look so much more natural. I love the curls last amazingly well all day long even if you find your hair needing to be brushed a few times.

What I didn’t love

The only thing that might trip someone up is that you are curling the whole piece of your hair from top to bottom. If you are someone who likes to keep the bottom piece out for that undone look, you won’t achieve it here. BUT, if you take the time to brush out the curls which is how I like to wear them, then they do kind of do that on their own. So really, there’s nothing not to love here!

Final thoughts

Overall, this is an amazing heat tool and gets a 10/10 from me. Everywhere I went after I used this I got compliments. Someone at church told me I looked gorgeous, and another person at a restaurant told me I had great hair. It was such a confidence boost, and not a compliment I receive every day as a mom of 3 who walks around feeling like I look frazzled most of the time.

My hair is currently longer than it’s been since high school and I keep wondering if I should cut it. It’s freaking heavy and most people don’t have thick hair this long without extensions (not bragging- it’s a curse as much as it’s a blessing) but when I can make it look like this I feel like the obvious answer is to stay Team Long Hair.
