As a SAHM, I wear many hats. I’m a chef, a chauffeur, a professional cuddler and kisser of boo-boos, an iPhone momtographer, and of course, a daily grocery shopper. With two still in diapers, there’s always an errand to run. My short list of things I grab every time I make a quick run to the store? Milk, bread, diapers, and wet wipes. 

I feel lucky that my kids love to drink milk. It’s the first thing they ask for when they come to the kitchen hungry in the morning. Every time they want a snack, they ask me for milk. After school? “Mom, I need some milk!” Truthfully, if my kids didn’t drink milk, I would be worried whether they were getting the nutrients they needed; calcium, potassium, vitamin D are all essential nutrients that help kids grow. Decades of research and hundreds of studies support the benefits of drinking milk. 

Drinking dairy milk is a simple way to get natural, high-quality protein plus other nutrients kids need to help power through the day’s activities. This is something I think about constantly, especially now that my oldest is off to school for half days. I am always thinking about what she eats and drinks before she’ll be away from me for a few hours and I hope whatever it is sticks in her belly. Dairy milk is a complete protein, so unlike a plant protein, it has all the amino acids your body needs. It’s cheaper than many of the plant based protein drinks as well, so families on a budget, rejoice!

Some days though, mom is feeling inventive and generous and we like to jazz up our milk a little bit! On a treat day I don’t mind adding a little bit of sugar, some berry juice and some strawberries into the mix and letting my kids indulge in a bit of homemade strawberry milk. 

I’ve read so many recipes for strawberry milk and tried to make it so many times, but for some reason I hadn’t been able to get it right. I would add sugar to the strawberries, make a syrup, muddle it all in with milk, and it just wouldn’t taste good. It wasn’t sweet enough. Not strawberry flavored enough? I got it down pat this go around though. 

You need: at least one carton of strawberries, sugar, water, milk, and any berry juice.

Step 1: Wash and de-stem a carton of strawberries (about 1.5 cups) and boil on the stove with 1 cup of water and 2 tablespoons of sugar for around 10 minutes.

Step 2: Freeze a milk glass. Because everything tastes better in an ice cold glass!

Step 3: Muddle the strawberry and sugar mixture until the strawberries are mostly liquid. Refrigerate.

Step 4: Mix equal parts berry juice, milk, and strawberry mixture in a glass. Stir well before consuming!

This is so refreshing and good! Strawberry, chocolate, or just a regular jug of milk, my family can’t get enough. Get yours on your next shopping trip!
