We are currently in a 90s revival in the worlds of fashion and beauty. I have memories of wearing a brown lipstick as a freshman in high school (technically that was 2001) and I am now seeing that shade everywhere. We are also revisiting matte lipstick. I love that every brand out there has their own version of matte lipstick. Today I’ll be talking about the Tarteist Lip Paints*!
I tried three of the new Tarteist lip paints recently in the shades Namaste, So Fetch, and Adorbs. I would describe these shades as nude, bright, and brighter. I have to admit it wasn’t love at first try. The doe foot applicator dispenses too much on your lips at once, and the product didn’t set. I felt it slipping around on my lips and I feared it would feather everywhere. But it didn’t take me long to figure out that I wasn’t applying it properly, and after that I had a totally new outlook on the product.
The tube below shows the shade So Fetch after I wiped the applicator off. Quite a lot of product is dispensed when the wand is pulled out of the tube. I ended up wiping off most of the wand before letting it touch my lips. You really don’t need much on your lips but if you have too much it never seems to set. The texture on my lips when I have the proper amount is smooth and almost like a mousse. There is some transfer for the first hour or so of wear, but as the day passes it seems to dry down to more of a stain on my lips and stops transferring. It’s comfortable to wear and won’t give you dried out lips, although if your lips are already chapped, it’s not very flattering to wear as it emphasizes the flakes. The three shades I have here each have a lot of color payoff.
Just to show you how much product you get in one swipe, I swatched three shades on my arm. I didn’t wipe off the wand at all and I had plenty of product to go if I wanted to keep coloring on myself.

As I was taking these pictures I realized later that my sweatshirt top was all jacked up but I didn’t think it was worth retaking the pictures for. Hopefully the string is not too distracting for you!
Of the three shades depicted here, So Fetch is my favorite. It’s a pinky coral shade that is very springy an refreshing to me. Namaste is a neutral that I thought would look terrible on me but it’s not so bad. I did think that more of a mauve neutral with some pinky brown would be more flattering so I ended up picking up two more shades. I now own Fomo and TBT as well and have been getting more wear out of those than the original three I showed here.
With the addition of the Tarteist Lip Paints to my makeup stash, I now own several formulas of matte lipsticks. Sephora collection, Kat Von D, Stila, and Bite all have a great formula. Of all of the formulas listed, Bite and Tarte are definitely the least drying. I’ve been wearing TBT and Fomo pretty much exclusively this week and I’m glad that my lips are no worse for the wear. They’ve stayed in pretty good shape with minimal application of lip balm in between wears! Occasionally during the day as the Lip Paint stains my lips and fades away I will apply some lip balm to refresh the shade a little bit and keep me moisturized but these are definitely not drying compared to other matte lip products on the market!
If I pick up another shade it’ll probably be Lovespell! I almost picked it up at Ulta over the weekend but I held off because I’ve already splurged a lot in January on beauty products. I’ll fill you in next week on some of those beauty buys! Have you picked up any of these yet? Which shades appeal to you most?
