A few weeks ago I wrote that I went through and tossed most of my skincare and kept it pared down to a few things I really really love. I recently did the same with makeup. It was something that needed to be done because I had too much stuff that had dried up or gotten gross by laying around unused for such a long time. I originally intended to write this post over the summer but as it’s been cooler weather for the past week it got me thinking about how I edit my makeup bag contents for the fall.
The products I am talking about here are not the only products I use by any stretch of the imagination! I have a ton of makeup and I love to play but I also know it can be tough to get ready when I have SO MUCH sitting around and I like to keep a few choices separate from my stash so when I only have 5 minutes to get ready (which let’s face it…that’s most mornings!) I have everything at my fingertips. Here is my 5 minute makeup bag edit for the season!
The emphasis for me is on my complexion. I want my skin to look great, and yes, that starts with skincare. But the next step is a medium coverage foundation along with some brightening under eye products. I have probably 4-5 foundations sitting out right now waiting for me to use them, but every day I end up reaching for the It Cosmetics CC+ Cream SPF 50+ Illumination instead. It has perfect coverage and makes my skin look great, and I love that the sun protection is there. I had been sent a sample of the Medium shade at one point, but I went back and bought the Light to use, and I’m almost out. I’m definitely replenishing when it runs out. I love the coverage on this so I want it to always be in my rotation! This ends up being my go-to most days and a lot of times I apply this and it’s not until after I have it on that I remember I was going to reach for something else.
Kiehl’s Clearly Corrective Dark Circle Protector with SPF 30 is a product that was new to me this summer. I’ve tried lots of products that promise to brighten under my eyes and reduce dark circles but I really think this works. It’s really hard to find a product that is specifically for under my eyes that also contains SPF 30. That’s huge! It goes on whitish and you barely need any but it sheers out as you rub it in. It lightens the whole area and almost acts as a sheer brightening concealer, but to really bump things up a notch, I usually apply the Becca Under Eye Brightening Corrector. In the picture above, I’m wearing these two products layered.
Two products I don’t use every day are primer and powder. To be honest, I ALWAYS intend on using these. What usually ends up happening is that I start applying my foundation and then remember after it’s on that I didn’t use a primer. I often reach for my blush and have it on one cheek only to remember that I intended to sweep some setting powder on. I’ve been using Smashbox Photo Finish Primer in Hydrating forever and it’s one of my absolute favorite primers. I love that it comes in a mini size because who needs full size ANYTHING when you can have a mini instead? I also use MAC Skinfinish Natural in Light Plus on days I remember to wear powder. I am running low on this shade because I’ve had the same pan for the last two summers now, but I may just switch to the It Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores Pressed Powder in Translucent (review/buy) when I’m out since it blends with everything you set it on top of. Either way, I do LOVE the Skinfinish Natural and it’s one of my favorite finishes in a powder.
When it comes down to adding color, I have found so many blushes with built in highlighter. It definitely saves me time in the morning to have both products wrapped into one. From time to time I do take the extra effort to wear an additional highlighter, but if I can get a lustrous glow on my cheeks from my blush alone, I will stick with just that step on those 5 minute days! I have been enjoying the Becca Beach Tint Shimmer Souffle over the past several months. Bonus points that I can use my fingers for application and not dirty a brush. The first shade I owned was Watermelon Moonstone, and I have since purchased Raspberry Opal and Fig Opal. Fig Opal is a super light neutral and it’s SO pretty but looks best on my skin when I am super fair. I can’t see it on my cheeks in the summer. My only gripe with these is that the ones I’ve had for almost a year are starting to get a little dry. If you splurge on this, make sure you plan to wear it a bunch!
I have a few go-to looks for eyes and lips and they’re all pretty easy to pull off in a jiff! The first is achieved by simply applying Make Up For Ever Aqua Cream Eyeshadow in #16 all over the lid. It’s a pinky beige shimmer that looks perfect all by itself, or as a base for another eyeshadow. I chucked almost all of my cream eyeshadows because over time most of them have dried out but I have had this eyeshadow tub for two years and it has yet to dry out! I am about to hit the bottom of the pot soon and I would absolutely repurchase. I have a few other colors including #13, a warm beige champagne shimmer, but I don’t wear that as much. I recently repurchased Benefit’s Creaseless Cream Eyeshadow in Birthday Suit because that has been one of my favorite shades of all time and I haven’t owned it in forever as well. So on days that I just wear an eyeshadow base, I’m wearing one of those choices.
On days that I’m not wearing one shimmery shade all over, I will start with Urban Decay Primer Potion in Eden. I wear this about half of the time, and my tube that I bought a year ago is still half full. This stuff lasts forever and is a very good base that covers the veins in my eyelids. I then usually move on to a neutral eyeshadow palette. I’ve been wearing Becca Ombre Rouge a ton lately. I usually use the left most shade all over my lid, and then tuck the fourth shade into my crease. I love that it’s a brown that is almost tinged in burnt orange, making it perfect for fall. The right most shade goes in the outer most part of my crease. I’m also wearing Tarte’s Energy Noir palette (review/buy) a bunch and love the smoky purple neutrals found in that palette.
The rest of my easy eye look is created with Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in Intense Black. I have been using that a lot lately because my every day standby Artliner in Noir by Lancome is running low. I love both for a perfect liquid eyeliner. n my lower lash line if I wear an eyeliner it’s been a Tarte SmolderEyes. I’m not even sure if they still carry the shade! It was one that came in a holiday set years ago that I rediscovered when I was going through my makeup. Anastasia’s Brow Wiz is the perfect eyebrow pencil that has a super fine tip on one end and a spoolie on the other. Last but not least, Dior It Lash (review/buy)has been stealing my heart for mascara lately. I love love LOVE it.
For lips, I choose one of three options most days so I keep them all in my makeup bag- a super bright shade that is pigmented and will leave a stain behind if it wears off, a color that goes with any blush or eyeshadow I would ever use, and a mostly sheer and inexpensive lippie that I can throw in my pocket. My choices are currently Bite Bellini (review/buy) (for the bright), Love Pop (for goes with anything) and Burt’s Bees Carolyna Coast (for cheap and amazing). A special shout out to Love Pop, described as a mid-tone shimmer raspberry, because it seriously reminds me of Cherry Coke. I love that shade and I’m legit obsessed. I also love the formula and I will probably be picking up a few more shades!
It may seem kind of insane that I can get through all of these steps in 5 minutes, but it’s seriously possible! If you don’t have a go to 5 minute look, you NEED one. And I promise you there is a method to the madness of leaving all of it in a bag even when you’re not traveling. I pull this out from underneath my sink when I need to be ready NOW and there is no thought process required, I just do it and everything in the bag is stuff I know works on me quickly. I also have been known to take my bag with me when I’m a passenger in the car.
Don’t forget the importance of updating your haircut at the end of the summer when fall hits. It feels so good to hit fall with a fresh trim so don’t forget to see your hair stylist. I’ve had a haircut since I took the picture for this and believe me I needed one after a summer of wearing my hair up in a topknot practically every day.
I’d love to know how you updated your makeup bag for the new season. Tell me what your favorites are in the comments below!
