keeping my van running with pennzoilMy hubby and I made some big purchases in 2014. We bought a van for our growing family, and we bought a house! We are also trying to cut back on spending and reach some more financial goals this year, so when we make big investments, we make sure to protect them as well as we can. When we signed for our house, we made sure to get a home warranty in case anything should go wrong in the first year of living here. When we bought the van, we got car insurance but we also committed to doing regular oil changes.

grocery cartEvery Sunday is our family errand day. Saturdays are for leisure in the G. household but on Sundays we wake up early, go to church, the grocery store, and clean house. Last Sunday it happened to be snowing, so we took advantage and make a quick detour to try and find a sledding hill in our town. As my husband was driving the vehicle that I usually use and not him, he realized that it was a Sunday afternoon and we desperately needed an oil change. We decided to buy our groceries and get the vehicle situated at Walmart with Pennzoil.

pennzoil counterpennzoil signI actually didn’t even realize you could get an oil change at Walmart, but I guess I should have figured, because they have everything there! Our Automotive Care Center was nestled into the back of the store. They don’t take appointments on weekends, but we were able to drop the vehicle off and they said they would call when they were done. In the meantime, we went shopping for some coffee thermoses (we are trying to brew coffee at home and skip the drive-through as one of our many goals for 2015), and stuff to throw in our slow cooker. My husband also needed a haircut and we realized as we were in the checkout line that we could do that too. Despite it being 5:00 when we were done with our errands, the auto center hadn’t called us to tell us it was done yet, so we went home!

When we got home they must’ve realized their snafu and called us to tell us we were closed and would we be picking our vehicle up tomorrow. We felt kind of goofy but we were able to rush back out and grab it before they locked their doors. It was also reasonably priced and I feel good about the motor oil they used. They have three levels of motor oil- conventional, high mileage, and platinum, and we chose the middle of the road option- high mileage. On a good, better, best scale it ranks “better” and is meant for car mileage above 75,000. The Pennzoil brand also helps clean out sludge the lesser oils leave behind and you can drive an extra 550 miles on it per year vs. with a dirty engine. If you are looking to get an oil change any time soon, Pennzoil also offers a free warranty that covers 15 engine parts that fail due to engine wear or friction, and you can check out more about that here

So now we are good for another few months on the oil changes. Hopefully the next time I bring a car in it’s nicer weather out. As you can see, we have lots of snow here and it’s snowing today!

pennzoilIt feels good to protect an investment, especially once it’s been paid off.  Speaking of paid off, we started the new year off by paying one of our vehicles off a year early! It felt really good to get the title in the mail saying that WE own it and not the bank.

What do you do to protect your vehicles for winter?

I am super jealous that you bought both a house and vehicle last year! That’s basically my dream right now, haha. We’re looking at buying a car like- this week (SO excited, we haven’t had one since we wrecked ours in an accident in Dec 2013!!! I’m dying without one at this point!!), so I will definitely be doing regular all.the.maintenance. and oil changes on that bad boy.

Winter in Chicago is the worst thing ever. For my car… I usually just try to make sure I always have at least a half tank of gas. Not exactly sure why but everyone always says that’s important haha. Soo jealous you got to buy a house AND car this past year!

Sounds like you guys had an awesome 2014! It’s so important to take care of your car…especially in the middle of winter. I always have errands to run, so I’m totally going to Walmart next time I need an oil change! #client
