I’ve been doing a lot of wondering lately what the makeup trends will be for 2015. A lot of 90’s stuff is back in style, and to be honest I’m not that wild about it. I’m hoping to cut back majorly on my spending in 2015, and with 90’s stuff in style, it might be super easy for me to hold back on my makeup purchases!

This is not a list that I am pulling from PR or anywhere- just from my brain! In fact, not all the trends that are in right now are all bad, so I’ll start with what I like and go from there.

Matte everything has been really cool lately. I am into the matte trend for sure. If you want to wear matte shades on your eyes, you are in luck because there are tons of palettes to help you achieve just that. I was trying to remember if I owned any eyeshadow palettes in the 90s when I was just starting to get into makeup, and I can’t remember owning a single one. I started wearing makeup in the mid 90s when I was in middle school, and while I have memories of owning eyeshadow duos from Clinique, I don’t think I owned a single palette. Was it because my measly allowance was only enough to purchase singles and duos, or did they not exist yet?

nude matte palettesIf you’re looking for neutral matte eyeshadows, check out Naked Basics, Naked Basics 2, or the Becca Ombre Nudes palette. If you are looking for a pop of color with your mattes, check out the Pur Minerals Soul Mattes, Tarte’s Tartelette palette, or the It Cosmetics Naturally Pretty palette.

bite beauty matte creme lip crayonsI JUST did a post on my favorite matte lips. If you don’t want to read it, check out matte lip products by Maybelline, Tarte, butter LONDON, Clinique, and Bite Beauty for the latest and greatest in matte lippies. I have collected an embarrassing amount of matte lipsticks in 2014, so naturally I am hoping the trend continues into the new year!

For lips, I am predicting a return to the 90s big time. The Marsala shade is growing on me and it’s similar to lipstick I wore in the 90s. I remember all through middle school and high school having a signature shade I would wear- I alternated between Clinique’s Bamboo Pink and Marsala-ish Teddy Bear (discontinued). Maybe it’s just because I’m really into makeup in recent years, but does anyone actually stick to a color or two for lipstick anymore? I feel like nobody I know has a signature shade. Do you wear just one color or alternate between a bunch? I remember using lip liner in the 90s that was a darker nude-pink shade. I could see stuff like that making a comeback, especially with the “Kylie Jenner lip” growing in popularity. I haven’t seen companies pushing lip liner yet but maybe that will be a trend in 2015. I don’t know if I’m into lip liner personally, even if it does make your lips look fuller! As someone who likes to switch it up, I just don’t want the commitment of being stuck with a shade all day.

primer for oily or dry skinEvery time I turn my head there is a new primer or foundation on the market. Everyone is trying to be new and innovative with their products. Foundation that doesn’t feel like foundation, or look like it. Primers with skincare ingredients. I love it and I love the no makeup makeup looks that are so popular. YSL Fusion Ink foundation and Laura Mercier Flawless Fluide were two of my favorite “different” foundation choices of 2014. I wonder what 2015 will bring? In the 90s I remember wearing mask-like matte foundation and that is a trend that I hope stays dead forever.

hourglass ambient blush paletteBlush has been done in a new and interesting way in recent years. Hourglass came out with the Ambient Lighting Powders and Becca has the Beach Tint Shimmer Souffles. Whether you are dealing with powder or cream products, the trend has been using products that create the ethereal, lit from within glow. Everyone is loving it, but I wonder what will be done to shake this trend up a little bit? I wonder if we will see people switching to using face gloss. MAKE Cosmetics makes a Face Gloss, and I wonder if we will see more companies coming out with products like this? I’ve used it before and although I liked the glossy sheen, it can be a pain if your hair lands on your sticky cheek. I’d have to admit I prefer my powder, cream, or liquid illuminators! People also used a heavier hand with blush and darker colors in the 90s- I wonder if that will make a comeback? Geesh I hope not!

I also wonder what specific brands will be doing to shake it up. Clinique didn’t come out with anything new and exciting for YEARS which disappointed me because they were the first brand I ever tried and loved. In the past 2-3 years they have reformulated lots of products and started upping their game. I would love to see what they do in the new year. I don’t think they will ever put out collections like MAC does but I think it would be really cool to see them heading more in that direction. Hourglass has been coming out with lots of innovative products with their Ambient Light powders, blushes, their new liner, and now their eyeshadow palette. I will be excited to see where they go next.

I predict (and seriously hope) that a lot of the products that we loved in the 90s and were discontinued make a comeback. Wouldn’t it be awesome to see a lipstick you owned and loved that’s been off the market forever come back in new and exciting packaging?

smashbox full exposure.jpgOne thing I don’t think will change is the trend for a thicker brow. I remember plucking my eyebrows until they were super thin in the 90s. In the last 5-10 years the trend has been for a thicker, youthful looking brow. I don’t see that going away, and I hope it doesn’t. After seeing the popularity of Anastasia’s Dip Brow Pomade and several other similar products, I bet we will see oodles more brow products in the new year.

I would also like to show you two things as an example of what will likely be very popular in the new year. What they have in common is that both of them kind of make me look at my makeup collection and think “good enough…no more!” And for a beauty hoarder, that is an awesome thing.

The Cargo Cosmetics Matte Topcoat can be applied over any (blotted) lip color to transform it into the uber trendy matte look that is so in right now. If you want to try the matte look but already have SO MUCH lipstick like I do, you NEED to try this. I have been blotting some of my favorite shiny lipsticks and they are perfectly transforming to a matte finish. The formula has a little bit of slip to it but is still somewhat drying like the typical matte lipstick will be, so make sure and exfoliate a bunch before using it!

punta cana before and afterCargo is sold at Kohl’s and when I was shopping for a Christmas outfit the other day I tried the Matte Topcoat there, that is before my own arrived in the mail for me to experiment. I had to snap this picture with Cargo’s Punta Cana lipstick before and after the Matte Topcoat. You can see that it’s thick, creamy, and glossy before, and matte and dried down more after. I am loving using this and hoping products like this that make me want to shop my own stash rather than buy more stuff increase in popularity!

Second I want to show you the Transforming Ombre Radiance Ribbon from It Cosmetics’ Naturally Pretty Celebration Palette. I have been on a matte eyeshadow kick for months now (and you’ll see soon- I have a few posts for you next week!) Besides just looking cool it acts as an eyeshadow transformer as well.

On the left you can see Wonderland and Coal from the palette, and I’ve applied the transformer on the right, then swiped a big long swatch of it next to it on the far right. It’s magical and turns matte shadows to pearl. SO cool. I hope they come out with a big pan of this and sell it in singles. Then I won’t feel the need to buy more shadow for a good long while.

What trends do you think will stay? What will go? I would love to hear your predictions!
