Over the past several weeks I’ve been testing out some Mary Kay skincare products. I was really excited to test this range out for two reasons. One, I haven’t used any Mary Kay skincare in almost 10 years, but I remember LOVING it. And two, it’s targeted toward acne which I have been dealing with a bunch over the span of my pregnancy. For the record, my skin is normal/dry right now and definitely acne prone.
The key to a clear complexion according to Mary Kay is using a skincare regimen that combines both salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. Salicylic acid exfoliates dead skin and benzoyl peroxide reduces bacteria. Used together, acne is fought and prevented at the same time. Cool! This system includes a Clarifying Cleansing Gel, Blemish Control Toner, Acne Treatment Gel, and an Oil-Free Moisturizer for Acne-Prone Skin. I used these all in conjunction with one another at the same time and now I am going to share what I think!
The Clarifying Cleansing Gel comes in the large tube. I like that I can squeeze out the amount that I want. It is meant to give the skin a deep clean, removing dirt, excess oil, and impurities, reduce shine, and unclog pores. This worked well with my Clarisonic and when I was washing my face just with my hands and water. The first couple uses this worked pretty well for me, but with prolonged use it started to dry me out a little bit. I found that removing my makeup with a facial oil first, and then cleansing with this immediately after was exactly the skin softening routine that I needed to keep me hydrated AND get rid of acne.
The Blemish Control Toner removes dead skin cells to keep pores from clogging and prevent new pimples from forming. This was my favorite product of the bunch. I loved that it came in a squeezy bottle so I could control how much I used at once. I could really feel that this tightened and cleaned out my pores or at least gave the feeling of doing so- I know that your pores actually tightening is impossible. My skin looked and felt great while using this!
The Acne Treatment Gel is a benzoyl peroxide product that you can use on individual pimples. I have used several products like this in the past- this one was pretty standard! It worked well to heal up a few pimples I had on my chin.
The Oil Free Moisturizer is the smaller tube pictured above. True to its claims, it is fast absorbing, lightweight, and non pore clogging. Did it provide balanced hydration and leave skin feeling nourished? Not sure about that. I ended up doubling up this moisturizer with another that was more hydrating on top because I was feeling a little bit dried out. I often double up my skincare to get more benefits at once so this is not new for me.
Overall, I’m digging the line. Now that I’m done testing these products out, I will still stick with as many of these as I can until I have to start a new product regimen. The toner was my favorite followed by the Oil Free Moisturizer. The scent of these was a bit strong, and definitely smelled familiar to me and like an anti acne product. They did work quite well but left me a little dry- then again I’m a special case by having dry skin that is acne prone.
