this summerDo you ever look back at other summers in your life and there are a few key things you remember that make it stand out? For me, the summer of 2005 was my first summer after college. After a crazy first year of school and freedom, I was back at my parents’ house and working the most boring job in the universe for 40 hours a week. That summer sucked. Summer of 2006 was my first summer I spent living away from home. I went tubing on the river every week, got a job selling shoes at Macy’s, and it was the first time in my life I felt really girly. It was kind of a life changing summer for me- I got a huge taste of freedom, was making great money on commission, and started buying my own nice makeup and skincare with my store discount. I started caring about what I put on my skin and bought lots of cute shoes and nice outfits where previously I was a jeans and a tshirt kind of girl.

The summer of 2010 was my first summer after meeting my husband. It was a really sucky summer because I had been teaching all school year and had no income over the summer months. I wasn’t able to find a job that would take me short term, and it was kind of a scary time financially. I was planning a wedding and we were completely broke. That summer was the beginning of me getting really interested in learning more about finances and getting out of debt so although we had money troubles it was life altering in a good way for that reason. The summer of 2012 was my first summer living in Washington state. It was a lonely time for me, and there were lots of forest fires where we lived. My husband was gone at training a lot, and I wasn’t working, and I was pregnant. I had just started blogging a few months prior, so at least I had that to keep me company.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what makes this summer THIS summer. What memories, sights, sounds, smells, etc make this the summer of 2014 and not just any other summer? I thought it would be fun to preserve this summer forever in my mind by writing down a few things that I’ve been really into this summer. I think this will be a fun post to come back to and reminisce over. If you think it’s a fun idea, you should try doing a post like this and email me what you come up with! I’d love to see what your summer looks like right now.

Smelling: Anything lemon verbena. I’m loving lemons so much lately I wish I WAS a lemon. I am also loving the smell of Jasmine on days when I’m not craving lemons so badly. Pregnant much?  🙂

Eating: Ice chips are my jam this summer. My mouth is watering for veggie burgers, fries with aoli, steak, and Kopps frozen custard too.

Drinking: Blood orange sorbet iced teas from Teavana. Definitely my drink of choice this summer!

Listening to: The sound of silence. I normally love listening to music but we’ve been turning everything off this summer in favor of some solitude.

Touching: My Macbook pro and my camera. I am learning the ins and outs of my camera this summer and I’ve been a blogging machine!

Feeling: Anticipation. The new baby is due to come in 7 weeks. We are closing on our first ever home that same week. We have so many good things to come right around the bend that it’s hard to wait for them!

Sick of: Traveling. We’ve been gone almost every single weekend of the summer somewhere. I’d love a chance to relax.

Reading: Nothing longer than a magazine or a blog post. I have been buying decorating and home magazines.

Watching: A lot of My Little Pony and Orange is the New Black!

Dressing in: My Flojo sandals and maternity jeans every day.

Wearing: Minimal makeup but focusing on skincare. SPF, eye cream, CC products, and serums are staples for me as my eye area looks like it’s aging faster than ever!

Wanting: To pay my car off this month and more hours in a day to get things done.

Sick of: The terrible humidity we’ve been having, but I know I’ll be eating my words in a couple months when I’m shoveling my car out.

Inspired by: A Beautiful Mess has been showing a lot of DIY projects that I really want to try in my new home. People who can keep plants alive. Great photography.

Shopping: At Crazy 8 all the time for my two girls. At Sephora and Ulta for goodies for me. At JC Penney for work shirts for Mike. But mostly not shopping, and focusing on saving!

Loving: The way my daughter gives hugs by choking me around my neck.

Going: Home all the time. To weddings. To the splash pad. Anywhere with air conditioning.

Annoyed by: Having to wear a retainer every day and night to try and move that one stubborn tooth.

Learning: About the world through my daughter’s eyes. Watching her piece together knowledge in her little brain has been so cool.

Waiting: To start potty training until we’ve moved into our new place and the new baby is here.

Hoping: My family meets all the financial goals I set for the year but we still have fun despite the hard work.

Thankful for: My husband working hard to provide for our family. Blogging. My friends and family. My health. Opportunities.

Although there is technically a lot of summer left, when I look back on the summer of ’14 it’ll be forever burned into my memory as the summer we moved back to Wisconsin. The summer we made up for lost time spent away by seeing the ever living crap out of our families and friends. Every weekend. The summer my daughter was a sponge and learning everything all at once, was cranky a bunch, and in an awful sleep schedule. The summer where we worked hard and made a lot of improvements in our lives, and finally reaped the benefits of years of hard work. The summer we went to the splash pad almost every day. Where we lived in a tiny, cramped little apartment for a few months and then bought a house! Where I will have moved twice in the same pregnancy. The summer of 2014 will forever go down in history as an awesome, eventful summer that I will never ever forget!

Now it’s your turn- what will forever remain in your mind as very “this summer” to you? I want to hear about your highs, lows, experiences, etc. Leave me a comment with the details!

Thanks for sharing your summer memoirs!!! My bday is 7/4 so that’s one of the reasons I love summer. But if there’s one thing that is a staple every summer???? I get sick due to extreme humidity.

What a great post, I love this idea!!! This summer has been great for my blog, it has been a time of healing emotionally from my miscarriage but also the excitement of trying to start a family again; it’s the summer that we have been house hunting…and learning as a couple about how to be better financially. It’s been a year of ups and downs but I feel like it’s definitely on the upswing this summer!

What a wonderful post! I re-read it at least 2 times because I truly getting to know you better. This Summer I honestly didn’t do anything exciting, compared to all other Summers, but there were fun little things, like going out to eat at new places and visiting a local art fair. Can I steal the idea, by the way?
