With the start of the new year, my head is buzzing with so many things. Ideas, goals, things I’d like to change this year, etc. I joined a link up today to share some of my mind’s ramblings with you.

I bought a DSLR for Christmas and this little peanut is my test dummy as I learn the ins and outs of the camera. As you can tell if you look up really close by her nose, she’s got really crusty boogers. She has been sick with the flu/teething/sick with a cold/teething/sick with croup/teething/ and now once again she has another virus. I’ve taken her to the doctor countless times in the last two months and there is not a lot that can be done for her. I feel so bad for her that she’s not feeling well and I feel bad for me because I’m not getting much sleep in between handling her. It’s midnight as I type this and my daughter is awake for the second time tonight. She is not showing any signs of falling back asleep any time soon unfortunately, so it’s going to be a long night for me. 
In better news…I’ve discovered the trifecta for crusty boogers- Boogie Wipes, a nose sucker, and Burt’s Bees Res Q ointment to heal her chapped nose.

Along with the rest of the world, I’m trying to eat a little better lately. No, that wasn’t a resolution of mine. I’m always trying to eat healthy, but sometimes I fail miserably at it. It tends to go in waves at our house. We eat great for a couple weeks and then we follow up all our successes by going out to eat twice in the same week and buying way too many delicious groceries and getting drive through coffee everyday. It’s a never ending vicious cycle I’d love to break. We are currently doing pretty well eating at home and eating healthy foods, so I thought I’d link you to one of my favorite snack recipes, simple hummus. I absolutely love making this and it’s SO easy. Let me tell you though, you really have to do the directions in order, rather than tossing everything in the food processor at once. The pita chips are an emeals thing- I basically take a pizza cutter to some whole wheat pitas, slice ’em up, and cover them with olive oil, salt, pepper, and cumin. Bake at 350 until they’re crispy enough that you like them and flip them half way through- probably 7 minutes per side.
Now that I’ve looked up this simple hummus recipe about 36 times, I finally just checked the site out a little further, and realized it’s a blog. I went over to follow them on Facebook and saw a few other recipes over there. I need to be following some food blogs. Do you have one? Please lead me in the right direction here.
And while we’re on the topic of food…few things make me as happy as a delicious homemade breakfast. I got up early yesterday morning, and made bacon and eggs, and had half a banana, and some pomegranate arils. Pom seeds are truly my guilty pleasure. Sunny side up is my jam when it comes to eggs too. The only thing that would’ve made this breakfast better was sourdough toast with grape jelly.

I’m on a self imposed no buy this month. It all started when I was reviewing a bunch of holiday stuff for the blog and my house basically exploded with products. We donated a bunch of stuff, I gave a bunch of stuff to friends, some of it I kept, but the bottom line is, no more STUFF needs to enter my house unless it’s something amazing and life altering, and definitely not until after my no buy is over with. I will obviously continue to review things as I find things I like, but not nearly at the rapid pace I was reviewing things during Christmas. Hello, burn out! And burn out for no reason. Nobody’s holding me down and forcing me to review things 🙂  That said, my last little splurge of 2013 was the Too Faced Chocolate Bar palette. I couldn’t find it in stores so I made an online purchase and I absolutely love it.
I’m not sure if I’ll review it here or not, but I can tell you the eyeshadows smell like chocolate. Not overwhelmingly so, but it is a really delicious scent and you can’t smell it once it’s applied. The shadows are long wearing and come in all different shades of matte and shimmer browns, beiges, golds, and a bluish and a purplish color. If I do a review I’ll show you the shades up close and personal. I think I’ll be getting a lot of use out of this palette. I’ve used it every single day since it arrived!

When I ordered the Too Faced Chocolate Bar palette, I quick tossed a mini Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick in Icon to my cart. It is teeny tiny and I apologize that the pictures below are rather poor quality. I love the way it applied slick and smooth and in a micro thin layer to my lips. I though my lips might have some slip after application, but it quickly dried down to a completely dry, matte finish. This stuff is totally budge proof! Immediately upon looking in the mirror I realized I had likely duped another lipstick in my collection, Stila’s Liquid Lipstick in Fiery. I got them out to compare quick and here’s what I found: 
I don’t think they’re an absolute 100% dupe, but they’re pretty darn close. We’re splitting hairs here. The Hourglass is swatched on the left, and Stila is on the right. They look pretty different below despite there being two full swipes of color on each swatch. If you look at the parts of the swatches that have color built up on the edges, you can really tell how similar they are. Truly, once it’s on, they wear identically- long wearing, difficult to remove, feels dry and matte on the lips, super dark shade, etc. I love the color so I’d recommend either, but you certainly don’t need both.

I got some valuable advice this week from a wise person, and that is not to hold people to standards that you know they can’t meet, unless you want to be disappointed. Although that seems so obvious, it’s something I struggle with and for some reason that very simple statement brought me so much clarity.
