Before we get into our review- we’ll give you the scoop on what our hair is like, how it cooperates, etc.
Justina: My hair is naturally very thick and coarse. It has a naturally wavy texture to it but unless the stars align perfectly on a given day, it’s just easier for me to heat style it and wear it straight or throw it back. Without the absolute perfect curling products, my hair does not look right wavy. To achieve a perfect wave I either have to put a disgusting amount of curling products in my hair, which weighs it down and makes it frizzy OR apply a ton of beach wavy type products accompanied by hair spray which makes it super crunchy. I wear my hair wavy only a few times a year because it is such a pain in the butt to get it exactly how I like it.
Jessica: My hair is naturally very curly, but fine in texture. It is color treated and prone to frizz. When it dries naturally I would say I have a natural medium sized to smaller sized curl. It is medium to long in length. It takes a lot of products for me to get my hair just right. I normally wear it curly, but I’ve been straightening it more often for simplicity and ease.
Miss Jessie’s Super Slip Sudsy Shampoo
8 oz for $14
This formula says it will detangle and moisturize your hair whether it’s curly, kinky, wavy, straight, relaxed, color processed or chemically treated. It is a super concentrated formula that restores a healthy balance to the scalp.
I have never had a shampoo that sudsed up so much! While scrubbing my head, the bubbles wouldn’t stop! Going on it felt a little slimy (in a good way) and then became really sudsy and I could feel it working on my scalp and my hair. In no time at all I was able to wash it out and feel how detangled and smooth my hair was. The scent was like green apples and was very light.
Jessica says: I loved the slippery feel of this shampoo. The name definitely gets it right! Its so slippery, but in a good way. It smells amazing, like citrus and coconuts to me which are smells that I love in my products. This got my hair really clean and it looked great after use. With very curly hair, I couldn’t tell if this aided with detangling.
Miss Jessie’s Creme de la Curl Cleansing Creme
12 oz, $16
Crème de la Curl is a non-sulfate curl wash specifically formulated for the dry, coarse, tightly coiled curl, but any hair type longing for a super moisturizing curl wash will benefit. You can never wash your hair too much with this carefully formulated non-sudsy cleansing crème. Excellent for curlies who want clean freshly prepped supple tangle free hair that’s ready to receive any Miss Jessie’s styling product.
Jessica says: I love that they have a sulfate free option. We have been working with more and more natural and organic companies and so I’ve become more and more aware of the types of chemicals that go into some products. I love that this one is sulfate free. It does smell more like laundry detergent which you will see below that Justina loves, but I am not as much a fan of this scent as the shampoo above which I loved the scent of. I’m very particular though. :0 I really liked this product as well, it got my hair clean without stripping any of the much needed oils from my hair. This left my hair soft and manageable which is of utmost importance for us curly haired girls!
Miss Jessie’s Creme de la Creme
12 oz for $16
This formula claims to be an ultra-creamy super rich conditioner for your natural, dehydrated, naturally curly, color or chemically treated hair. It claims to moisturize, protect, and detangle dry hair like nothing else, leaving strands smooth, restoring moisture balance to your hair and scalp, and banishing dry and brittle strands forever.
Justina says: I thought this was the perfect complement to the Super Slip shampoo. In my opinion, it smells a little bit like laundry detergent, but I LOVE that smell (call me crazy- I hate doing laundry but I love the smell of it). If you don’t, it may be a little irritating to your nose since the scent was a little strong. It did moisture my hair and did not suds at all. Will it banish my dry and brittle strands forever? Not sure, but for today they feel pretty darn good.
Miss Jessie’s Quick Curls
8 oz, $32
Quick Curls weightless spiraling crème was formulated as a fast acting no fuss light weight styler that gives you the results you want fast. This fresh scented conditioning formula exclusively blended with essence of ginger flower and lime fruit activates a quick, light weight, frizz free smooth curl. Excellent for fingerstyling relaxed hair; no rods necessary, a rescue remedy for botched overprocessed texturizers, and great for our beautiful white gals.
Jessica says: I must be one of those beautiful white girls they’re talking about because I love this product! I think the #1 concern with curly hair is manageability (including frizz). This is basically an all in one product which I absolutely love. I think us curly girls have all left the house with wet hair with tons of product in it, looking great, only to look in the mirror in horror an hour later and see frizzy crazy curls. You never know if its going to be a good hair day or not. I try to stay away from using a blow dryer in the morning as it tends to make my curls more frizzy and I HATE diffusers because I hate tiny little ringlet curls.
With this product, you shower using your favorite Miss Jessie’s shampoo and conditioner, towel dry, and apply this to sections of towel dried hair. I’m sure I’m not the only curly girl that stares longingly at my wet curls wishing they would dry exactly like that. This is essentially what this product does. It locks in your natural curl while your hair is still wet. Its the only product you need and once your curls are dry, they will be perfectly formed (or dam near close), frizz free, and soft. Or you can go the route of using a gel/mouse, hairspray, shine spray, finishing spray, anti-frizz oil, etc and still wind up with frizzy unmanageable curls. I also much prefer this scent which is much lighter than the pillow soft curls which smells like laundry detergent (a scent my co-bloggie Justina loves, but me not so much!)
Justina’s look using Pillow Soft Curls
8.5 oz for $22
To create this look- I first washed with the Super Slip Sudsy Shampoo and the Creme de la Curl. Then, I applied a leave in detangler and some argan oil to my strands. Lastly, I applied Pillow Soft Curls from root to tip in my still wet hair (I skipped my bangs because I wanted to keep them straight). Afterwards, I scrunched my hair while blowdrying until my hair was about 3/4 of the way dry. I sprayed a firm hold hairspray in my hair to keep my wave in place.
Hair when it was still 3/4 dry
My hair several hours later, bone dry.
The back of my hair, totally dry!
Jessica’s look using Pillow Soft Curls
I love how great my natural curls look with this product and I love that it worked great on naturally very curly hair like mine and naturally wavy hair like Justina’s
Justina’s favorite product: Pillow Soft Curls! It gave my hair a great wave and it didn’t feel frizzy, look dried out, or crunchy. I didn’t even feel like I needed to touch up any pieces with a curling iron. All around, I loved this product. It does smell strongly of baby powder, which is worth mentioning, but didn’t bug me.
I thought it was a cool thing that the shampoo was 8 oz and the conditioner was 12 oz. I always run out of conditioner first, so it’s nice to have more of that. It’s like they read my mind! And this company has free samples here if you want to try- http://www.missjessies.com/shop/Free-Samples
We aren’t sure how the shipping fees work or if there are any on samples, but it’s worth checking out!
Jessica’s favorite product: Quick curls! I love the scent of this and the ease of this all in one product. My curls looked amazing. My hair felt a little more weighed down with the pillow soft and with Quick curls, my curls still were manageable and yet very soft and didn’t feel like they had any product in them.
What product would you most like to try. Have you heard of Miss Jessie’s?
