14 minutes and 24 seconds. That’s how long it took me to run a mile on the treadmill Tuesday night at the gym! That’s right…I’m back at the gym again after a long hiatus. I had a baby on September 23rd, and Tuesday marked 6 weeks and 1 day since she was born! I think it’s time! Still…I am struggling with some major issues.
At the time when I got pregnant, I was in the process of “trying” to lose 20 pounds. I was juggling three jobs and working most days from 7 am- 9 pm. I had a very inconsistent schedule, and I chose to handle that by going through the drive through frequently, catching up with friends at the only time I had free (10 pm Applebee’s appetizers anyone?) and pretending I didn’t have a gym membership. I say I was “trying” to lose 20 pounds because I was hoping in my head I would lose the weight but not actually doing anything to get there.
Anyways, we all know how the story ends…I got pregnant, and gained a whole lot more weight.

Someone of my height (5’11”) can safely gain 25-35 pounds while pregnant. I ate healthy during my pregnancy, went to the gym several times a week until I was 6 months pregnant, and worked out with a personal trainer! When I felt too big to work out comfortably, I went on regular walks in the park with my dog. By the time I had my baby, I had gained right around 35 pounds.
As anyone who has had a baby knows, after you have a baby the weight loss is pretty rapid but there is a lot to lose. At six weeks out, I have lost over 20 pounds so far but still have a long ways to go. I joined a weight loss group in town where several women have been “buying in” and the winner who loses the highest percentage of body fat takes all. We took pictures with a local photographer so we could track our progress.

It could be worse, but my posture is terrible, and my wardrobe, hair, and makeup desperately need some TLC. It’s easy to overlook your own needs with a newborn baby and it can be hard to take the time away to even shower and properly style your hair for the day! My prepregnancy clothes are too small and my maternity clothes are too big. It’s a frustrating time for my wardrobe and getting dressed is no fun when your only pair of jeans is ill fitting and you have limited shirts you can wear that don’t make your stomach look like a deflated beach ball!
Wardrobe aside, I am struggling with my mindset. I have never had a healthy body image. I was never in sports growing up so I don’t have a healthy active hobby that I love. I am not a great cook, so eating healthy is not exciting to me. Dinner is usually a boring sandwich and a handful of carrots when I’m trying to eat healthy, not a beautifully cooked pinterest-worthy concoction. Growing up, I always remember being self-conscious because I’ve always been tall and had a boyish frame. I remember shopping with my mom and her disgustedly leaving a store because she didn’t fit into the size she wanted to buy (which was a size I was bigger than for most of my life). I remember the day a friend came over in middle school and wanted to compare the size of our love handles- something I’d never heard of before that day! I was horrified.
So when I was in the gym on Tuesday, the biggest I’ve been in my entire life, I knew I had to make a change. This is about more than having my clothes fit or winning $200 from my weight loss group. I don’t want my daughter to grow up with the same experiences I’ve had. I never want her to hear me say something negative about my body. I want her to have a healthy relationship with food and with exercise.
In the next few weeks, I will keep you updated on my weight loss. I hope to share some recipes, and tips and tricks that have been helping me on my journey. I will be reviewing a workout DVD made by the woman who choreographed the movie “The Black Swan” and many more things! I hope you will leave me encouraging comments and any ideas you have that might help me. It has been SO hard for me to get my butt back to the gym but as I saw 14:24 flash on the front of the treadmill on Tuesday, I KNEW I could do it. Slowly but surely I will get back to a healthy weight and a healthy body image.
